      Did you know that Akkineni Nageswara Rao, one of the most prominent Indian film actors since his debut in 1941, was so influential that on his cremation, he was honored with a 21-gun salute, which is an honor usually reserved for a top military or government official? Rao, the youngest of five brothers of a poor farming family, began his illustrious rags-to-riches story when he played female roles in theatres at the age of 10 in 1934. His luck turned when he was discovered by the famous film producer Ghantasala Balaramaiah at a railway station in Vijayawada and was given a big sidekick role in the 1941 Telugu film, Dharmapatni. Rao, who became known as ANR, was multitalented and excelled in acting and singing, which made him the ideal Indian movie star.

In 2013, Rao was diagnosed with colon cancer and died eight days after the foundation day celebrations of his production company, Annapurna Studios on January 2014. On his cremation, thousands flocked the venue and he was given full state honors, including a prestigious 21-gun salute.
